What Went Wrong with the Air-Conditioning Unit?
The homeowner complained that his air-conditioning system was not working properly. According to him, the fan outside was not spinning, and there was a burning smell coming from the condensing unit.
Our technician went over to his house and checked the cooling unit, which was a 5-ton American Standard R-22 air-conditioning condenser. It was set to the off position. He requested the owner to turn it on so he could observe the operation and found the compressor was functioning properly. However, the outdoor fan motor did not work.
The Reason Why the A/C Fan was not Working
Using a piece of welding rod, our technician attempted to turn the fan blades to see if they would run. The fan motor did spin and came to a halt indicating a possible short in the winding or a bad bank capacitor. A bad capacitor is the common cause of malfunctions in air conditioners.
In addition to stabilizing voltage, another important function of the capacitor is to help startup both the fan motor and the compressor. It can degrade gradually over time or may stop to operate instantly.
Our technician removed the side panel and located the bank capacitor. The unit contains two capacitors: one for the compressor and one for the fan motor.
Since a capacitor stores power, he needed to discharge it first. Using a bleed resistor, he removed any remaining charge out of the capacitor so he wouldn’t get shocked or electrocuted when removing the capacitor.

After the removal of the capacitor, our technician tested the microfarad (μF) with his amp probe meter and noted that the microfarad reading of the capacitor was about 3.5 microfarads. The reading of a good capacitor must be 5 microfarads plus or minus 10%. The reading indicated that the capacitor was bad.
Our expert retrieved a new capacitor from his truck, tested it and confirmed that its reading was within the margin of error for a new capacitor. He then installed it in the unit.
After the installation of the capacitor, they turned the air conditioner back on and tested the amp draw of the motor. The nameplate of the equipment as well as the nameplate on the fan motor both indicated 1.3 run amps.
When the system was up and running, the actual rating of the fan motor was 1.2 amps, which is within the tolerance of the motor. He then tested the refrigerant level and reinstalled all of the panels for the proper and safe operation of the unit.
